Xubuntu 12.04 Fullfills My Needs

The New version is much more appealing than the old. The first time I used it was version 8, and it has improved quite a bit sense then. It has a nice look. It is also fast. I hope they don't forget the users and create a new desktop manager that runs people off.

Xubuntu is a nice version of ubuntu. It uses less resources than ubuntu but offers more function than lubuntu. If you like to play around with other operating systems, it is one to try out.

Ubuntu or Lubuntu -- which one is for me

Even though ubuntu and lubuntu are built from the same foundation, there are a number of differences between them. The first is the appearance. Ubuntu places its menu bar at the top of the window where lubuntu places it at the bottom where it looks more like Microsoft Windows. Ubuntu is slower but more powerful. It offers more options. Each user must decide what they want. Lubuntu is for slower computers. This means it loads faster and is quicker. The speed and quickness means sacrifices. One such sacrifice is Lubuntu doesn't recognize CDs and DVDs. Some users depend on their CDs and DVDs. If users are only interested in surfing the INTERNET, then the lack of CD/DVD isn't a problem. Another decision the designers made is choosing Chromium for their browser. They chose it to lower the use of resources; however, this means the flash player from sites like You Tube doesn't work correctly. The newer version of flash player doesn't work; it shows a black screen. An older version must be used. This creates a problem because Chromium shows a pop-up that "the plugin is out of date,"and placing the line "--allow-outdated-plugins" in the command of the launcher doesn't work. This needs to be fixed. One way around this is use another browser, such as firefox. This defeats the purpose of selecting Chromium and having it run in the background. This is merely the basics. When it comes to picking one operating system over another, users must ask themselves are they using an older, slower computer. If upgrading the computer or buying a new one is out of the question, this helps the users decide. How fast or how slow is your computer? Another option for users is use both. At startup, the users can decide which one, Ubuntu or Lubuntu, they want to use. This allows them to try and use both. It is fun going from one to the other. Try it yourself.
